What actually lasts in mobile simulation games, who is winning, and eight Unity-ready concepts for a solo or small-team studio.

## By the numbers

- 20% of all 2024 mobile game installs were simulation, tied with puzzle as the #1 download genre.
- $4.8B simulation-genre revenue in 2025, up 11.2% year over year; sandbox grew fastest at +26.9%.
- 22.3M peak concurrent players on Grow a Garden, the highest CCU in gaming history.
- 0.4% of 1,411 new sim projects cleared $100K per month in H1 2025. Evergreen, but brutal to break into.

## Three takeaways for a Unity studio

1. **A few sub-genres are genuinely evergreen; most "simulators" spike and die.** Farming/management, idle tycoon, narrative merge and avatar/life sims show multi-year durability. Township earned about $2.1B over 10+ years; Gossip Harbor $723M+ since 2022. Realistic vehicle sims and hypercasual "simulators" chart briefly, then vanish.
2. **The teen viral engine lives on Roblox and avatar/dress-up formats.** Grow a Garden, Steal a Brainrot, Dress to Impress, plus mobile-native BitLife and Gacha Life, grow through TikTok/Shorts word of mouth. Classic IAP farming and merge sims skew older (women 35+) and grow through paid user acquisition, not virality.
3. **For a Unity solo or small team, arcade-idle and cozy sims are the highest-ROI targets.** Buildable with standard Unity tooling and stylized low-poly art, with proven year-round volume.

## Seven signals from the data

1. **Most downloaded, rarely top-grossing.** Simulation and puzzle were the two biggest download genres in 2024 (about 20% each), but revenue concentrates in strategy and RPG. Sandbox revenue grew 26.9% year over year ($1.1B to $1.4B).
2. **Farming is the evergreen core.** $955M in 2025, roughly half the simulation market, with downloads up 2.6% to 317M. Eight of the top-10 farming titles launched between 2012 and 2020. Township: about $2.1B lifetime, 600M downloads.
3. **Narrative merge is scaling fastest.** Gossip Harbor has earned $723M+ since June 2022 and hit about $62M in a single month (October 2025). Audience: women 35+. Around 100 LiveOps events per month.
4. **Idle / arcade-idle is the solo-dev sweet spot.** Pizza Ready (100M+ downloads, about 8M DAU) and Burger Please pushed Supercent to #7 global publisher by downloads. Roughly 70% ads / 30% IAP, with low CPI.
5. **Teen virality lives on Roblox and avatars.** Grow a Garden hit 22.3M concurrent users (about 35% under 13). Roblox: $4.9B in 2025 (+36%).
6. **Retention is a LiveOps problem, not a loop.** Simulation posts solid Day-1 retention (about 30.1%) but only middling Day-30. Evergreen status comes from content cadence and events.
7. **Know what spikes and dies.** Hypercasual "simulator" fads chart briefly (I Am Cat: 15M downloads, then gone). Realistic vehicle sims hold a durable but low-revenue niche.

## Eight Unity-ready concepts

Scored 1 to 5. For Unity dev and art assets, lower is simpler to ship; for market proof and teen appeal, higher is stronger.

| # | Concept | Pitch | Unity dev | Art assets | Market proof | Teen appeal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Brainrot Farm | Tap-and-idle farm where you grow, harvest and trade meme-able mutant creatures with friends | 2 | 2 | 4 | 5 |
| 02 | Pocket Diner Tycoon | One-tap restaurant from lemonade stand to global chain | 2 | 2 | 5 | 3 |
| 03 | Merge Harbor | Merge to rebuild a seaside café while a soap-opera mystery unfolds | 3 | 3 | 5 | 2 |
| 04 | LifePath | A whole life through branching text choices, with shareable outcomes | 2 | 1 | 4 | 4 |
| 05 | Avatar Street | No-rules sandbox dollhouse town for characters, homes and role-play | 3 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 06 | Fashion Battle | Timed styling challenges with player voting and collectible cosmetics | 4 | 4 | 3 | 5 |
| 07 | Cozy Acres | Stardew-style farm-and-village life sim without aggressive monetization | 4 | 3 | 4 | 3 |
| 08 | Idle Empire | Build an automated money-making empire through prestige loops and managers | 1 | 2 | 5 | 2 |

## A staged roadmap, lowest risk first

1. **Prototype now (08, 02):** build Idle Empire or Pocket Diner Tycoon first. Run a 4 to 6 week prototype and judge it on CPI and D1 retention. Proceed at D1 ≥ 35% and a sub-$0.50 organic-feel CPI; if D7 < 12%, add progression and events before spending on UA.
2. **Layer in the viral hook (01, 05):** Brainrot Farm or Avatar Street, with a shareable moment engineered for TikTok/Shorts. If organic installs aren't at least 30% of total within 60 days of a content push, iterate the shareable artifact.
3. **Only with a team or funding (03, 06, 07):** higher ceiling but expensive LiveOps, netcode or content scope.

Avoid realistic vehicle sims, Roblox-scale UGC platforms and trend-chasing hypercasual "simulators", and budget for LiveOps from day one.

## Caveats and methodology

- Figures are directional: AppMagic and Sensor Tower estimates exclude store commissions, ad revenue, web-shop income and most Chinese third-party Android stores, and methodologies differ.
- Demographics are partly self-reported. Roblox's age-verified split is roughly 35% under 13, 38% ages 13 to 17 and 27% adult.
- Roblox virality is not standalone success: the mechanic can be borrowed; the platform's distribution cannot.
- Breaking in is hard: only 1 of 55 new farm sims and about 0.4% of 1,411 new sim projects cleared $100K/month in H1 2025.
